Kpop: The Scandal That Has Ended Seungri’s Career…(75/365)

It looks like 2019 is already showing itself to be a year where the Kpop industry’s dark side is being revealed. It’s been hard to keep up with everything but essentially a massive scandal that has revealed prostitution, drugs and the rape and filming of many women has been exposed, and it has led to a purge of all of the suspects.

It all started with BIG BANG’S maknae Seungri and his club the Burning Sun being implicated with charges of prostitution and selling drugs and now it’s become an exodus of rapist scum.

A group chat was revealed to have sex video’s and discussions of raping women under the influence and day by day more and more people are being implicated in this, including Jung Joon-young.

An article in Strait Times has stated that :”Seungri has been booked for procuring prostitutes for VIP customers of his Burning Sun club while Jung allegedly shared sex videos with artists, including Seungri, via a group chat. Ten women were reportedly filmed without their knowledge.”

We have Kang Kyung Yoon to thank for actually bringing light to these allogations through serious journalism, by reporting on the Kakaotalk chatrooms.

She said ““I brought up the allegations of Seungri lobbying to investors by offering sexual favors as bribes last month. Since then, I reported on how the original text messages [that contained the evidence] were procured by the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission and a chatroom including Seungri and other male celebrities that involved the sharing of hidden camera videos and photos.”

“I decided to report on the issue of [Seungri] providing sexual escort services when I first found out about an extravagant party in 2015 that is now known as the ‘Seung-tsby (Seungri + Gatsby) Party.’ This party, where [Seungri] invited and entertained various foreign investors, happened right before Seungri founded an establishment called Yuri Holdings in 2016.”

“I realized that the party was used as a tool for advancing [Seungri’s] business,” continued Kang Kyung Yoon. “In addition, there were some parts about the party that I was able to raise questions about [Seungri] ordering sexual escort services in the Kakaotalk chatroom.”

It took her two years of collecting information and then she was finally able to reveal all. Victims were also afraid to come out due to fear of stigma and how society views women who come out against abusers, especially those in powerful positions.

“On top of that, I believe that the incident of male celebrities secretly filming women is a huge problem that has resulted from the fact that many women are treated as sexual tools and some people’s distorted perception of sex that came from the sexualization of women, as well as corrupted use of power in the entertainment industry”

As a result of everything coming out, and the amount of hate he has received, Seungri has retired from showbiz after 10 long years. He wrote in a statement:

“I thank my fans at home and abroad for the love over the last some ten years from the bottom of my heart, but for the sake of YG and Big Bang’s reputation, I think this is where I’ll have to draw the line.”

This investigation has also raised a lot of questions, as Seungri was set to begin his national service this month – so will he still be able to do it? In South Korea, all able bodied men must serve in the military for at least 21 months. Police have stated that the investigation can still continue while he the BIG BANG star serves in the army, and to defer the date the military have stated he would need to write a request.

Public reaction has been heavily divided as you’d expect. Some fans stated that he should kicked out of the band. On the other side, some fans are continuing to stay loyal to him, and Bloomberg has quoted one social media user saying “We call on the real fans’ voice, do not fall into the shameless trap, we support Seungri!”

“I have faced heavy criticism from the public for the last month and a half and I’m being probed by all investigative authorities in the country,” he said in his Instagram post. “As I’ve been branded as a ‘national traitor’, I cannot stand the fact that I’m harming others for my own sake.”

Seungri’s also had his passport confiscated in this time as he is now considered a suspect for the crimes. It brings a sickening irony to him being proudly called the ‘Great Gatsby’ of South Korea.

Jung Joo-Young has also quit the industry after admitting to filming women and sharing the footage. He said in a statement “I filmed women without their consent and shared it in a chatroom, and while I was doing so I didn’t feel a great sense of guilt.”

“Throughout the rest of my life, I will repent on my immoral and illegal acts that constitute crimes”

“I will faithfully cooperate with an investigation by police that will start on Thursday and I will readily accept whatever punishment is in store for me.”

This isn’t the first time he’s had these charges against him, as his ex-girlfriend made the same accusations in 2016, but withdrew them.

Here’s a current list of everyone implicated in these accusations:

  1. Seungri (formerly of BIGBANG).
  2. Jung Joon Young.
  3. Choi Jonghoon (formerly of FTISLAND).
  4. Yoo In Suk, also known as Mr. Yoo, former CEO of Yuri Holdings.
  5. Mr. Kim, former club MD.
  6. Kwon Hyuk Jun, brother of Girls’ Generation’s Yuri.
  7. An unnamed former employee at YG Entertainment.
  8. A friend of Jung Joon Young’s, who appeared with him on a travel program.

A user wrote in allkpop “Based on their investigations and report, Yong Junhyung and Lee Jonghyun were not a part of the original chatroom, and instead part of a separate one.”

For the full timeline of everything so far it’s best to read this article here, because it says everything in full detail. Korea Scouter TV’s Youtube channel has also done an amazing job of explaining everything in detail for international fans.

The next few weeks are probably gonna show a lot more people involved in this, and instead of defending them, we need to stand by the victims. As much as it pains to say this – what you see from your idols is not their actual personality.

Let the police do their job, the fact that they’ve already banned Seungri from leaving the country means they have hard evidence against him. Idols are humans, which means they’re also capable of doing fucked up things.
